We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Brie Lindsey as Deputy Director. Starting September 1, Brie will lead our team of science-policy professionals to secure the role of science in the decisions that are shaping the future of California’s coast and ocean.

Brie brings a depth of experience and expertise to this role. Currently serving as Interim Co-CEO and Director of Science Services for the California Council on Science and Technology (CCST), Brie leads their Science and Program Officers and Associates to connect daily efforts on science services to CCST’s mission and strategy.

Brie joins OST at an exciting moment: with a strong financial foundation, increasingly high-profile engagements, and state partnership and support, we are poised to strategically expand and holistically live up to the promise of our founding legislation. We look forward to working together to broaden our state and academic partnerships, engage more fully in drawing resources to policy-relevant ocean science, and foster the next generation of science-policy leaders in California.

While at CCST, Brie has worked to innovate on science service formats while ensuring they continue to meet policymaker needs and are delivered with integrity, rigor, and impact. In addition to developing staff capacity and skills to deliver science advice to policymakers, she contributes to CCST’s strategic planning, develops and leads CCST’s science initiatives, directs projects requested by decision makers, works with CCST partner institutions and the CCST Board of Directors, and supports outreach efforts that connect CCST’s network of experts, policymakers, and other partners. At OST, Brie will bring her expertise to respond to state ocean science priorities, and horizon-scan to foster equitable science solutions to the challenges facing coastal communities and ocean ecosystems in California.

Prior to joining CCST, Brie was placed in the Senate Office of Research as a CCST Science & Technology Policy Fellow. There she had the opportunity to provide research, analysis, and expert testimony on a broad range of policy topics including the nexus between water, oil and gas; crude transport by rail; California’s Paid Family Leave program; and genetically modified salmon. Brie received her doctorate in Biological Oceanography from the College of Oceanic and Atmospheric Sciences at Oregon State University, with a dissertation focusing on the distribution, bioenergetics, and behavior of krill through numerical models. Prior to that, she earned a BA in Environmental Sciences from the University of California, Berkeley.

Welcome Brie, OST’s staff and board are excited to do good work together!
