Melanie Herrera is an experienced leader in ocean and climate policy, specializing in science-policy communication, stakeholder engagement, and advancing nature-based solutions for resilient communities and ecosystems. In her role at California Ocean Science Trust, she supports the state’s efforts to integrate ocean-based carbon removal strategies into climate action, bridging the gap between cutting-edge research and decision-making. With a strong belief in equity and collaboration, Melanie approaches policy challenges with a commitment to building partnerships and community to drive tangible impact. She is currently working on projects exploring marine carbon dioxide removal.

Prior to joining the OST team in 2025, Melanie was a Management and Program Analyst at the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) in the Office of Response and Restoration, where she led an outreach team advancing congressional engagements and science communications. She also served as the Communications Manager at the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation, where she led digital campaigns to inspire the next generation of ocean stewards.

Melanie holds an M.A.S. in Marine Biodiversity and Conservation from UC San Diego’s Scripps Institution of Oceanography and a B.S. in Environmental Science and Policy from the University of Maryland, College Park.

Melanie is based out of the Bay Area.
