We’re excited to announce the launch of a new project to explore fisheries insurance as a tool for coastal community resilience on the West Coast.
Our ability to predict when, where, and which fishing communities will be impacted by climate-driven disasters is still limited, making insurance and other risk pooling techniques potential tools to help communities weather a crisis. Though recent innovation in the climate insurance space has spurred thinking for climate-ready fisheries, further research and collaboration is needed before these ideas can be translated from theory to practice.
Leveraging OST’s positioning on the landscape – including trusted relationships with government entities, the nonprofit sector, and fisheries experts – and our organizational mission to serve as the connective tissue between science and policy, we will bring together decision makers, industry representatives, community members, and scientific researchers to develop a shared understanding of how fisheries insurance may support fishers and local fishing economies into the future. This event will explore emerging knowledge gaps and data needs, discuss best available science, and explore barriers and opportunities for advancing fisheries insurance on the West Coast.
