Dr. Liz Whiteman is an experienced nonprofit leader, providing strategic direction to strengthen execution of OST’S mission. Liz balances an entrepreneurial spirit with a partnerships focus to accelerate progress towards a healthy and productive ocean future for California. She leads a team with science, policy and management expertise to bring diverse perspectives together and foster innovative approaches to difficult problems.

Liz has over a decade of experience working at the science-policy interface in California on topics ranging from marine protected areas to sea-level rise and ocean acidification. Prior to joining OST, Liz served as an Associate Editor for PLOS Biology, a peer-reviewed open access journal promoting and sharing open publication and data across the biological sciences. Liz also spent a decade in the Caribbean, promoting science-informed decisions for fisheries and protected area management.

Liz received her PhD and BSc in Ecology from the University of East Anglia, UK.
